Description Michael E. Adams 2005-01-09 12:44:34 UTC
On Compaq Presario R3000 (uses an Alps touchpad), running mc withing a gnome xterm causes junk characters to be displayed in gnome xterm whenever mouse button is pressed or the touchpad is tapped. The mouse button (or touchpad tap) does not function (other than cause junk characters to be displayed). Also, mc cannot be exited in a gnome xterm becaues the mouse is needed to select the Exit menu function. The functions keys cannot be used in a gnome xterm to select F10 to exit mc. Once mc is exited using a second gnome xterm to "killall -9 mc", pressing a mouse button or tapping touchpad withing the original gnome xterm still causes junk characters to be displayed.

mc works correctly within a text term outside of gnome and xorg.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. open gnome xterm within gnome
2. run "mc"
3. Try tapping on the touchpad or using its mouse buttons.

Actual Results:
Junk displayed on xterm.

Expected Results:
Correct mouse selection

Just tested mc under the latest gnome and kernel emerge updates. Don't know which has contributed to what I am about to report. mc now accepts the function keys within a gnome xterm. So, I can now exit mc normally. Once mc is exited normally, I no longer have junk characters appear in the gnome xterm if I press the touchpad mouse button or tap the touchpad. However, I still cannot use the touchpad mouse buttons or tap the touchpad within the gnome xterm while using mc. This still produces junk characters.

Try this : Run mc, go to Options->Display Bits and check Full 8 bits input.
It worked for me.

Well, I'll be... That was it!! Finally!! Thank you so much. This has been such a
pain for sooooo long! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Why isn't this set in the
ebuild??

Regards,
Mike
