using the modifier should be ok, and, well, I'm not using an Italian layout too.
I'm ok with the EXTENDED_KEYMAPS="euro2" solution, so the it.map patch can be discarded. I tested on a laptop with it keyboard, I was not able to buy it here with an us keyboard
