Description Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-17 23:05:58 UTC
After upgrading xorg to 6.8.0-r4 from 6.8.0-r2, I now get Firefox crashes (only on fark.com, although I haven't been to many other sites since the xorg upgrade a few hours ago) with the error:

The program 'firefox-bin' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)'.
  (Details: serial 80 error_code 8 request_code 145 minor_code 3)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I didn't have this problem with any other version of xorg up to and including 6.8.0-r2.

If you saved your 6.8.0-r2 (perhaps via quickpkg), grep it for ^PATCH_VER. Same for -r4.
Comment 2 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-18 07:48:19 UTC
What am I grepping...the binary package, unpacked source, or installed files?
Comment 3 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-18 08:20:29 UTC
-r2 was PATCH_VER="0.2.7" and -r4 is PATCH_VER="0.2.8"
Comment 4 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-18 08:33:49 UTC
The only changes are updating a patch for Newport cards and adding a security patch to libXpm.

The error message suggests a Firefox bug.

"The program 'firefox-bin' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program."

Assigning to them. If they can show it's our problem, they can assign it back.

You might want to actually try doing as they suggest in the error message, --sync + gdb.
Comment 5 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-18 13:05:32 UTC
what version of firefox ?
Comment 6 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-18 13:26:43 UTC
Firefox was 1.0-r2. I upgraded to 1.0-r3 to see if that would take care of it...it didn't. I downgraded xorg back to 6.8.0-r2 and it still didn't fix it. I disabled the Composite and Render extensions (I had enabled both at the same time I upgraded xorg to -r4). With those disabled, the firefox crashes seem to have stopped. I'll file a bug with the mozilla team.
Comment 7 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-18 13:27:44 UTC
Nevermind, I see this bug has already been reassigned to the mozilla team :)
Comment 8 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-18 13:47:06 UTC
Try specifically disabling composite for that application by setting the handy environment variable XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1.
Comment 9 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-18 13:50:00 UTC
Should I go back to xorg-6.8.0-r4 and enabled Composite and Render globally in xorg.conf again?
Comment 10 Donnie Berkholz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-18 13:52:07 UTC
It _should_ be independent of whether you're using -r2 or -r4 if it's related to anything other than xpm or the newport video card.

Just some feedback, FWIW:
I have the same problem with mozilla-firefox-1.0-r3 and xorg-x11-6.8.0-r3
(with Option "Composite" "Enable" in the "Extensions" Section).
For me,

$ XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 firefox

works perfectly. Thanks for that workaround, Donnie!

I have the same problem. The proposed solution woks ok. I detect that Mozilla
1.7.8 and epiphany 1.6.0-r3 have same problem and the solution works fine for
all it. Some URL where these crash are:

Stale bug, please reopen if this is still an issue with up-to-date firefox versions and >=xorg-x11-6.8.2-r4
