the ebuild xfree86 4.2 r5 does not compile the DRI driver for the 3dfx 
voodoo3/voodoo banshee video card named tdfx_dri.so.

this should be installed in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri/

Hi.  Not to sound offensive, but please search bugzilla before you commit bugs.
This issue has been brought up before, and the reason is that XFree86 do not
by default have the correct libs to compile tdfx_dri.so.  You need a third party
glide library to do so.

This issue is resolved in xfree86-4.2.0-r6, which is masked due to unsufficient
testing.  Having 'voodoo3' or 'voodoo4' or 'voodoo5' in your USE and merging
-r6, should give you the tdfx_dri.so module (just one of the voodoo? flags 
please).

Test it out and let me know please.
