Got the same problem when using ld.gold, ld.bfd works fine.
Comment 2 Paolo Pedroni 2016-04-27 09:28:54 UTC
(In reply to Sven B. from comment #1)
> Got the same problem when using ld.gold, ld.bfd works fine.

The only thing I hadn't tried... :-(

Thanks for the tip, now it works.
Comment 3 James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2016-04-27 13:07:52 UTC
This part of the error is possibly a red herring.

/var/tmp/portage_ondisk/portage/dev-java/icedtea-3.0.1/work/icedtea-3.0.1/pax-mark-vm: 20: exit: Illegal number: -1

gnu_andrew, you put "exit -1" in your pax-mark-vm script. This works in bash but not in dash, which is the shell being used here. I don't think that's the real cause of the issue though.
Comment 4 James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2016-04-28 21:35:05 UTC
I managed to reproduce this without trying to. I was actually trying to reproduce bug #581186. It's very strange because this isn't a hardened system and I have PAX_MARKINGS="none" set. I was using gold, which seems to be the key element here, but it only happened with gcc 5.3.0, not 4.9.3.
Comment 5 James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2016-04-28 21:44:35 UTC
Hold the phone! You didn't actually say you were running hardened and you didn't enable the pax_kernel flag. Neither did I. When that flag is enabled, it is supposed to use elfix's paxmark.sh, which does respect PAX_MARKINGS and probably doesn't suffer from this gold issue. With the flag disabled, it seems like icedtea is falling back to a less reliable method instead of disabling PaX marking entirely. I'm just retrying with pax_kernel enabled to see what happens.
Comment 6 James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2016-04-28 22:09:18 UTC
Enabling pax_kernel worked. I'll dig deeper tomorrow if gnu_andrew doesn't beat me to it.

Comment 8 Sven B. 2016-08-03 09:37:39 UTC
binutils-2.26.1 both ld.gold and ld.bfd result in the error for me.
binutils-2.25.1 with ld.bfd works; haven't tested with ld.gold.
Comment 9 James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2016-08-03 09:49:43 UTC
I know I said I'd look at this earlier but I got sidetracked. I now consider this a priority so I'll try to get to it tonight.
Comment 10 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2016-08-03 14:55:10 UTC
Installing sys-apps/elfix allowed icedtea-3.1.0 to finish building on my system. That package provides the /usr/sbin/paxmark.sh script that the icedtea build system seems to insist on calling.

I have PAX_MARKINGS="none", and USE="-pax_kernel".
Comment 11 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2016-08-03 15:18:42 UTC
So, a couple of problems:

1. The ebuild does not DEPEND on sys-apps/elfix unless pax_kernel is enabled.

2. The build system tries to apply PaX markings unconditionally. This will fail if elfix is not installed.
Comment 12 James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2016-08-03 15:29:33 UTC
(In reply to Mike Gilbert from comment #11)
> 1. The ebuild does not DEPEND on sys-apps/elfix unless pax_kernel is enabled.

And it shouldn't do.

> 2. The build system tries to apply PaX markings unconditionally. This will
> fail if elfix is not installed.

As I said above, it falls back to an inferior method and that's why it fails. I need to fix it so it doesn't attempt to apply markings at all when they're not wanted.
Comment 13 James Le Cuirot gentoo-dev 2016-08-03 22:53:42 UTC
I have now worked around this by passing --with-pax=/bin/true when pax_kernel is disabled. I have also filed an upstream bug report.
