USE="-rdp" compiles fine.
net-misc/freerdp[client] is the required dependency.
Thanks for reporting this. I've done some testing and found that the previous version of freerdp (i.e. =freerdp-1.1.0_beta1_p20150312), we can still build VLC-2.2.1 with USE="-client" however on the current version (i.e. =freerdp-1.2.1_pre20150326), we now need USE=client. Because +client is in IUSE for freerdp, most folks haven't encountered an issue. I'll work with the Gentoo Devs to update the ebuild to reflect the USE=client dependency.
rdp? ( >=net-misc/freerdp-1.0.1[client]:0= ) appears in order. The newest version of net-misc/freerdp sets the trend.
