tesseract-3.02-r1.ebuild was removed, the changelog mentions "drop old". This leaves x86 with no other stable ebuild than tesseract-2.04-r1, which is an inferior version and has a known build failure (see bug #391457). After seeking advice on IRC, I tried building 3.03_rc1. It built just fine on my system and is already stable on amd64, so the suggestion is to stabilize it on x86 also. I'm sorry about this faux pas. It should not have been removed if it was the latest stable for x86. To move forward I suggest to stabilize the latest version which is tesseract-3.04.00-r2. It has many improvements. It is not exactly a month, but I think we can proceed here. x86, please prioritize this one. I'm adding all arches that are still on tesseract-2. Please check if you can stabilize this version too. There may be dependencies necessary. sparc: You also need to stabilize media-libs/leptonica.
amd64 stable
Stable on alpha.
app-text/tesseract-3.04.00-r2 with media-libs/leptonica-1.70 installed, results in: checking for leptonica... yes checking for pixCreate in -llept... yes checking leptonica version >= 1.71... configure: error: in `/var/tmp/portage/app-text/tesseract-3.04.00-r2/work/tesseract-3.04.00_build': configure: error: leptonica 1.71 or higher is required ....correct dependency is missing?

Hmm, how did you even get the tesseract-3.04.00-r2 ebuild without also getting leptonica-1.71? I wrote the dependency like this because we don't have this old leptonica in the tree anymore, implicitly assuming that you have at least the oldest in tree version installed. I think it is stupid to depend on >=package-someversion even if the oldest in tree version is higher than that.
I'm on amd64 old version was installed: Wed Oct 1 17:10:16 2014 >>> media-libs/leptonica-1.70 Wed Oct 1 17:12:23 2014 >>> app-text/tesseract-3.03_rc1 yesterday I upgraded to Tue Sep 1 13:45:21 2015 >>> media-libs/leptonica-1.71-r1 Tue Sep 1 13:48:34 2015 >>> app-text/tesseract-3.04.00-r2 but I had to upgrade letoptonica manually first because of see above. When I look into tesseract-3.04.00-r2.ebuild I see the line DEPEND=">=media-libs/leptonica-1.70[zlib,tiff?,jpeg?,png?,webp?].... ...which I think is not correct?

I see. You are right then. I updated those lines to 1.71 in the 3.04.00-r* ebuilds.

With USE="tiff opencl" it blows chunks on unresolved tiff symbols; are you sure this is stable on amd64? (meaning tesseract-3.04.00-r2) Somewhere it needs a -ltiff and cannot depend on leptonica linking with tiff. I'll take a look as soon as all the language files get downloaded...

We've seen this before, but I thought it was resolved. Do you mean USE="-tiff"?? I remember that I had the feeling that tiff is not actually optional on tesseract, although the build system claims it. I just tried and on my machine every of the four USE combinations involving tiff and opencl works. Can you please open a new bug with emerge --info and your use settings on tiff, leptonica, etc. ?

I just tried > and on my machine every of the four USE combinations involving tiff and > opencl works. Can you please open a new bug with emerge --info and your use > settings on tiff, leptonica, etc. ? OK, I think I have fixed this in commit dd6102d321b. The issue was that if you want USE="opencl" on tesseract, then you need USE="tiff" on leptonica and the corresponding dep was wrong in the ebuild. You can't trigger this bug with USE="tiff opencl", I think. If so, then it is a different bug. Now we have the weird situation that when you have USE="-tiff opencl" on tesseract, then your package manager will ask you to set USE="tiff" on leptonica. You can't have the cake and eat it.
