Without session support loading owncloud will result in errors like: "Fatal error: Call to undefined function OC\Session\session_name"...

I have tested this with owncloud 8.0.3 and PHP 5.6. However, I suspect any version combination will be affected by this in a similar way.

(Only users that have purposely disabled session support in PHP will have an error since the use flag is enabled by default.)

Nice catch! I checked 5.0.19 (oldest version in tree) and it also needs session support. So I fixed the dependency in all versions currently in tree
