libvlccore.so got an soname bump. You should update the subslot to match.
Thanks for bringing this up -- you're correct, and we'll be updating it soon to show proper subslot. $ locate libvlccore.so /usr/lib64/libvlccore.so /usr/lib64/libvlccore.so.8 /usr/lib64/libvlccore.so.8.0.0 $
21 Apr 2015; Ian Delaney <idella4@gentoo.org> vlc-2.2.0.ebuild, vlc-2.2.1.ebuild: update subslot to 5-8 in versioned ebuilds -2.2*, noted by floppym, fixes bug #547232 by him, discussed with proxy maintainer
(In reply to Ian Delaney from comment #2) You forgot about vlc-2.2.9999.ebuild and vlc-9999.ebuild.
Hi Arfrever, I originally was planning to include those but after discussing with Ian & xiaomiao, they were ommitted due to being live ebuilds that lacked keywording.
(In reply to Nick Andrade from comment #4) I don't see why KEYWORDS has any relevance to the SLOT value. I would recommend that you keep the SLOT synced with the latest version that has KEYWORDS, or you set SLOT="0" with no subslot.
This association came directly from Patrick. All of you, see Patrick. We spent several lines discussing it live in irc only to be second guessed here. It amazes me how something so fundamental triggers such disagreement
(In reply to Ian Delaney from comment #6) Patrick does not maintain this package. Neither do you. Arguing with either of you on this would be a waste of time.

That's not a real reason. I can understand being lazy about updating the subslot in the live ebuilds between releases. However, if you are updating the SLOT for a release, you might as well update the live ebuilds at the same time.
Alternatively, drop the live ebuilds from the tree if you do not wish to maintain them.
The -2.2.9999 & -9999 ebuilds have been update to show the correct subslot. There was a misunderstanding on what we were working on yesterday between Ian, Patrick, & myself. After sorting things out, you're correct, the subslot on the live ebuilds should have been updated. Ian has already pushed the change through so we should be all set. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for ensuring they got corrected.
