I cannot reproduce this.

Can you do a quick test to try and produce a different (and possibly more useful) error?

Add the following entry to /etc/hosts, and then retry the emerge.

127.0.0.1 pypi.python.org

This should cause a fetch failure when easy_install tries to fetch argparse. I'm hoping it will also give a clue as to exactly what is trying to pull in argparse.

Then it emerges fine w/o any error.

oh, ofc, attached both success and failure of today's tests
Comment 7 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2015-04-17 16:59:09 UTC
Hmm... well that was less helpful than I was hoping for. I still have no real idea why it is trying to install argparse.

Does this grep turn up anything?

grep -R --include requires.txt argparse /usr/lib64/python2.7/site-packages

Yeah, neither of those should be there.

Can you reinstall dev-python/stevedore and see if that gets dropped from stevedore-1.3.0-py2.7.egg-info/requires.txt?

neither re-emerging of stevedor nor httpie nor python-updater (reinstalled dev-embedded/scratchbox-1.0.20::gentoo) helped

Comment 13 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2015-04-18 23:38:12 UTC
If reinstalling those packages did not remove argparse from requires.txt, then something seems to be wrong with your pbr package.

I'm probably not going to spend any more energy trying to figure it out.
Comment 14 Livid 2015-04-21 18:14:12 UTC
The same thing happens for me on ~x86.
Comment 15 Livid 2015-04-21 18:18:06 UTC
Works fine with dev-python/pbr-0.8.2-r1 though. But not with dev-python/pbr-0.10.8
Comment 16 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2015-04-21 18:18:44 UTC
Any suggestions from the python team?

My best guess is that having "argparse" in egg-info/requires.txt from dev-python/stevedore is causing this, but I cannot figure out how argparse is ending up in that file. dev-python/pbr specifically blacklists it for >=python2.7.
Comment 17 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2015-04-21 18:32:47 UTC
Hmm... I can reproduce with dev-python/pbr-0.10.8. I must have missed testing with that version.
Comment 18 Ian Delaney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2015-04-22 08:07:49 UTC
pbr was a 'nightmare' when I tackled it this time last year. This is typical of what prometheanfire has had to deal with in packages from openstack

In stevedore (at least 1.2.0, 1.3.0, 1.4.0):
- argparse and six are used only in examples.
- pbr is used only at build time.

So dependencies in requirements.txt are incorrect and should be deleted (as is done in my ebuild):

sed \
    -e "/^pbr>=0.6,!=0.7,<1.0$/d" \
    -e "/^argparse$/d" \
    -e "/^six>=1.9.0$/d" \
    -i requirements.txt

stevedore ebuild with sed arguments to clean up requirements.txt

I'm attaching the ebuild with sed changes that fixed requirements.txt for me and removed the need for argparse; In-case this helps someone else.

Regards.
