Description Miroslav Šulc gentoo-dev 2015-01-30 11:05:55 UTC
only english ui is available though scribus supports many more languages and i have enabled few:

app-office/scribus-9999 was built with the following:
USE="cairo graphicsmagick hunspell minimal pdf poppler scripts templates tk -debug -examples -osg" ABI_X86="64" LINGUAS="cs_CZ de en_GB en_US es_ES it ja pl_PL pt ru sk_SK zh_CN zh_TW -af -ar -bg -br -ca -cy -da_DK -de_1901 -de_CH -el -en_AU -et -eu -fi -fr -gl -hu -id -ko -lt_LT -nb_NO -nl -pt_BR -sa -sl -sq -sr -sv -th_TH -tr -uk" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7"
Comment 1 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2015-01-30 11:48:44 UTC
Could you please attach a build log? for me it installs all requested languages.
Comment 2 Miroslav Šulc gentoo-dev 2015-01-30 11:56:02 UTC
where are they or should they be located? maybe i was little bit inaccurate. maybe they install but are not grabed by scribus.

i was searching for translation files in various places using `equery files scribus` but found none. but the main reason i thought they are not installed because when entering preferences, the only language i can select is english thought i have several languages selected.

I tried it with af

qlist scribus | grep af
/usr/share/doc/scribus-9999/html/tutorials/scribus-short-words/after_short_words.png
/usr/share/scribus/dicts/hyph_af.dic
/usr/share/scribus/translations/scribus.af.qm

scribus -l af
Comment 4 Miroslav Šulc gentoo-dev 2015-01-30 13:38:28 UTC
# equery files scribus | grep translations

shows nothing in my case

build.log

it's up to the install phase including, but excluding the merge phase (as it cleans the ebuild files from portage temp directory, i did not find the switch to prevent it)
Comment 7 Justin Lecher (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2015-01-30 14:28:36 UTC
a single linguas works, but not multiple
Comment 8 simon 2015-04-23 12:24:59 UTC
In my view, there is a great confusion about the linguas variable in scribus. Many people expect---and possibly also the maintainer of the ebuild---that this variable should install different languages for the gui, i.e. menus, help, documentation etc. But scribus is a type-setting programm and has to deal with different languages __in the document it produces__ independent of the language of the user interface.

Therefore, my suggustion is that the linguas variable in scribus ebuilds should not refer to the language of the gui but to which languages are supported in your type-setted documents, i.e. spelling, hyphenation, glyph-variants in special contexts, etc. This is similar to the use of the linguas variable in tesseract or texlive ebuilds.

For example there is a linguas_de_1901. This should activate spelling ("scharfes ß"!) and hyphenation support for German as it was used throughout the 20th century---in your documents! But what sense should is make to set de_1901 as the gui language?

Setting a certain linguas variable should therefore result in having installed the desired dictionaries from resources/dicts into /usr/share/scribus/dicts (curruntly, all dicts are installed independent of the linguas settings), the relevant loremipsums (here as well, all available loremipsums are installed), and so on. It should not, however, affect which translations of the gui (from resources/translations) are to be installed.

I think that there in fact to issues - the one reported here that the gui is in English independent of the user's locale, and the other one that the linguas variable does not do what it should do.

What I wrote in Comment 8 is also true for prior scribus versions. My currently installed version 1.4.5.
emerging scribus-9999 fails with an "Failed patch: scribus-1.5.0-docs.patch!" error.
