Description Serge 2015-01-15 18:32:20 UTC
after updating pango to 1.36.8 the munin cron job always output this message:

(process:11481): Pango-WARNING **: /usr/lib/pango/1.6.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I did rebuild all packages depending on pango without success

After a while I found the problem:

the old pango leave this file: /backup/daily.1/sk-srv/etc/pango/pango.modules
this contains a list of modules pointing to the old inexistent files

Suppressing the /etc/pango solved the problem.

Hope this will help some other users

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. x11-libs/pango-1.36.8

Actual Results:
(process:11481): Pango-WARNING **: /usr/lib/pango/1.6.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory in cron output

Expected Results:
none

That's not limited to munin.
Comment 2 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2015-01-15 19:47:21 UTC
This is probably caused by /etc/pango/pango.modules which on some of my systems says:

/etc/pango/pango.modules:/usr/lib64/pango/1.6.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so BasicScriptEngineFc PangoEngineShape PangoRenderFc latin:* cyrillic:* greek:* armenian:* georgian:* runic:* ogham:* bopomofo:* cherokee:* coptic:* deseret:* ethiopic:* gothic:* han:* hiragana:* katakana:* old-italic:* canadian-aboriginal:* yi:* braille:* cypriot:* limbu:* osmanya:* shavian:* linear-b:* ugaritic:* glagolitic:* cuneiform:* phoenician:* common:

I assume an older version of x11-libs/pango once generated that file.
Comment 4 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2015-05-02 16:33:46 UTC
Yes, I had the same problem on multiple systems. We should add some cleanup in the ebuild to make sure it is gone.
Comment 5 Dave Kemper 2015-08-01 10:02:39 UTC
I also recently upgraded to x11-libs/pango-1.36.8, and I see this same warning whenever I run lilypond (media-sound/lilypond-2.18.2 on my system). Portage doesn't know who owns /etc/pango/pango.modules:

# portageq owners / /etc/pango/pango.modules
None of the installed packages claim these files:
        /etc/pango/pango.modules
#

When I rename this file, the warning goes away.
Comment 6 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2015-09-05 15:12:09 UTC
Should we try to remove that file if possible or is it regenerated by some tool or similar?

I will try to get it removed in a pango bump then
Comment 8 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2015-09-28 10:15:31 UTC
I also see Arch is removing that old file:
https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit/packages.git/tree/trunk/pango.install?h=packages/pango

[master 68aa8e8] x11-libs/pango: Remove orphan old file (#536726), cantarell fonts are needed for tests (#532346), respect ROOT variable when creating modules.cache (#534360 by Mark Tomich and Fabian Groffen).
