The file manager (nautilus) starts automatically on login (GNOME Classic session). This behavior after upgrading from gnome-?. Also the case with a newly created user (new home dir). It doesn't occur with a normal GNOME session. Login with gdm. I will try with startx.

I don't understand what do you mean by file manager starting automatically :/ Do you mean that a file browser window is opened by itself or similar?

I guess you are hitting the bug that this patch is supposed to fix :)

Yes, a file browser window is open as soon as I log in. I have to hit Alt-F4 to close it.

But I am getting used to working with a normal GNOME session...

Parse force-desktop before exiting?

But it happens when I log in from gdm (every time).

Yeah, it happens because classic mode calls nautilus in that way, look at the bug description:
