Does configure really need to try to create an IPv6 socket for this using AC_TRY_RUN? I.e. AC_TRY_LINK should surely be enough here.

I doesn't not really matter does it? if the kernel does not support ipv6 it will fail anyway. I will test and commit the following patch.
