Description Vladimir 2014-11-11 23:55:35 UTC

Screenshot

The sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.17.1 and 3.17.2 kernels refuse to load with Nouveau video driver, and give kernel panic exactly after the lines shown in the screenshot (attached).

If I configure the kernel without nouveau support, I am able to start the system with it, that is why I believe this problem is nouveau-driver related.

That doesn't show a kernel panic. Did you attach the right image file?

> That doesn't show a kernel panic. Did you attach the right image file?
Yes, it is the right file. Like I said, it shows the lines _after which_ the kernel panic happens. I can also attach a screenshot of the kernel panic screen. It is absolutely not informative for me, so I did not attach it at first.

I have very much the same problem except that I don't see a kernel panic, but just a hang.
Starting with the 3.17.x series it hangs as soon as udev tries to load the nouveau module.
With the nouveau module blacklisted or nouveau.modeset=0 the kernel starts without a problem.

That's true, but in such case it is impossible to start X.
The same problem is here for sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.18.1
Comment 6 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2014-12-30 18:59:56 UTC
Can you recreate with the following on 3.18.1:

1. Configure Nouveau as a a module and don't load at start up
2. Compile kernel with: CONFIG_NOUVEAU_DEBUG=y
3. Boot kernel
4. Try to load the module with:

modprobe nouveau debug=trace

Here are all the debug levels:
fatal, error, warn, info, debug, trace, paranoia, spam
Comment 7 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2014-12-30 19:09:05 UTC
you may want to add modeset=1 to the modprobe command. Not sure if that is needed or not, as the documentation says:

"Whether the driver should be enabled. 0 for disabled, 1 for enabled, 2 for headless"

Why it would default to disabled or headless I do not know.

error captured with netconsole

Hi,

I /may/ have had the same issue after upgrading to 3.17.7: kernel hangs as soon nouveau is loaded.
The error printed to quickly on screen, and with some sort of recursive print, but I managed to capture it from netconsole (attached).

Commit http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/drivers/gpu/drm/nouveau?id=ff4c0d5213b015e60aa87c1352604f10ba9c3e12 solved the issue for me.

From the commit, it happenned because my kernel is built for UP system (with '# CONFIG_SMP is not set' in my .config)

If it's really the same issue, i'd suggest to backport this patch to 3.17 and 3.18

Thanks

That's definitely the right fix for Bruno brubru's error.

Vladimir's trace only shows the end of it (and it might be recursive), so hard to diagnose. The critical point is whether kernel config has CONFIG_SMP=y or not set (if not set then above commit will fix it).

Backported nouveau patch for 3.17/3.18

Can someone just check this backported patch on 3.17 and 3.18, give me the OK for both kernel versions and I'll add it to the next releases.

I wasn't going to do another 3.17 as it's EOL, but I'll do one for this patch.

Same problem (kernel panic) here with
# CONFIG_SMP is not set
CONFIG_DRM_NOUVEAU=m
and gentoo-sources:3.17.7

gentoo-sources:3.17.8-r1 fixed it and works fine.

Thank you :)
