Description Piotr Karbowski (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-10-31 16:08:56 UTC
On a fully upgraded ~amd64 system >=x11-base/xorg-server-1.16 does not work well with kbd driver, the driver is loaded but any key press results in process X taking 100% of cpu and not working keyboard.

After hooking into X process with strace one can see tons of repeated:

read(6, 0x7fffb398bae0, 64) = -1 EIO (Input/output error)
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0
select(256, [1 3 6 8 12 13 14 17 18 19 20], NULL, NULL, {0, 5000}) = 1 (in [6], left {0, 4998})
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, [IO], [], 8) = 0
read(6, 0x7fffb398bae0, 64) = -1 EIO (Input/output error)

1.15.1 and 1.15.2 does work all right, 1.16 and 1.16.2 does not.

The system runs without udev, there's no systemd and without desktop environment, just with openbox started from .xinitrc.

Xorg.0.log does not have any error.

Reproducible: Always

x11-drivers/xf86-input-keyboard-1.7.0 was built with the following:

One more thing, I've also tested the 1.8.0 version of keyboard driver that never got into portage, the latest version of driver have the same issue, but works great with the 1.15.x.
Comment 4 Piotr Karbowski (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-10-31 18:34:43 UTC
this is getting hilarious.

So I was googling around and found this Red Hat bug - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=619889

Long story short, for some reason Xorg now settle on tty1 unless told to use other (via XDG_VTNR prepared for the glory of systemd), and if utilize tty1, it does conflict with mingetty, the IO errors was pretty much the same, and as I switched to another terminal using `chvt` I saw that X no longer abuse cpu.

so what I did was:

    XDG_VTNR=7 startx

and it worked. Fully working xorg-server-1.16.1.

1.15 also runs on tty1 and there's no problem, I am not sure how it supposed to be resolved but workaround could be to adjust /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc of xinit to default to tty7 unless told otherwise.
Comment 5 Piotr Karbowski (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-10-31 18:37:58 UTC
Looping in Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn <chithanh@gentoo.org> who bumped xinit that in fact introduced this very regression.

Please do not not add people to CC: unless they explicitly requested you to.

xinit-1.3.4 is package.mask'ed on non-systemd profiles
