nvidia-smi seems to be near end of live (see [1]). Instead nvidia now provides a persistance daemon, shipped with drivers 319 and higher [2]. An sample init script should be provided at /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/sample/nvidia-persistenced-init.tar.bz2. This example isn't shipped with gentoo, but could be used in combination with /etc/init.d/nvidia-smi to write a new init.d script which should replace /etc/init.d/nvidia-smi. Fixed in 343.22-r1. Thanks for the report!
In -r2 I added /etc/conf.d/nvidia-persistenced as well.
Would it be possible to fix this for nvidia-drivers-340.32 too? 343.22 is the current version in the short lived branch, whereas 340.32 is the latest version in the long lived branch. Only the long lived branch comes with support for Telsa cards. [1] http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
