The I2C package needs to be updated to 2.8.6 for it to work with kernel 2.6.5 and above. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge i2c 2. 3. Actual Results: ERROR. Incompatible kernel. Expected Results: Uhh, Compiled?
External I2C is only required for 2.4 kernels. For 2.6 use the I2C support already in the kernel and then get a matched version of lm-sensors if you need it...
PLEASE CHANGE STATUS TO UNRESOLVED (I can't) My system does not have any 2.4 kernels (all installed sources are 2.6+) Yet... bash-2.05b# emerge ksensors gkrellm-sensors mm-sources -p These are the packages that I would merge, in order: Calculating dependencies ...done! [ebuild N ] sys-apps/i2c-2.8.1 [ebuild N ] sys-apps/lm-sensors-2.8.1 [ebuild N ] app-misc/ksensors-0.7.2-r1 [ebuild N ] x11-plugins/gkrellm-sensors-0.1 [ebuild N ] sys-kernel/mm-sources-2.6.7-r2 I can't emerge ksensors OR gkrellm because they depend on software I Can't compile.

reopening as requested
I've stabilized 2.8.7 which shouldn't have this since i2c-2.8.7 is a dummy package on 2.6 kernels - if you still have this issue then please reopen this bug. Thanks!
Marking as FIXED.
