Description maurerpe 2014-08-01 02:45:30 UTC
The dev-libs/redland-1.0.16 and dev-libs/redland-1.0.17 ebuilds both depend on:
ssl? ( dev-libs/openssl:0 )
however the package use not use openssl. Appearently, the openssl dependancy was removed upstream in 1.0.9, but the --with-openssl-digests configure option was not removed until version 1.0.17 (which is not in the tree).

Reference release notes: http://librdf.org/RELEASE.html

Likewise, the ssl use flag can also be removed.

I found this when performing libressl compatibility testing. One of the things I check for is that the configure scripts correctly detect libressl. redland didn't and it turns out that it didn't detect openssl either, because it never looked.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
mkdir ~/openssl_save
mv /usr/lib/libssl.* /usr/lib/libcrypto.* /usr/lib/engines /usr/bin/openssl /usr/include/openssl ~/openssl_save
<<note that /usr/lib/libcrypt.so and /usr/lib/libssl3.so are part of glibc and nss repectively, and NOT part of openssl>>
USE="-ssl -ssh" emerge -1 curl
USE=ssl emerge -1 redland
<<put back openssl stuff or emerge -1 openssl>>

Could also use emerge --unmerge openssl, but that made me nervious that I would break something, plus @preserved-rebuild would saved the openssl libraries, which are needed by lots of other stuff on my system and USE=ssl emerge redland would have tried to reinstall openssl.
Actual Results:
Emerges fine.

Expected Results:
If the openssl dependancy was actually needed, this would fail.

Additionally, redland clearly linked against libcurl (the compile command included -lcurl), but curl is NOT in the dependancy list.

configure.ac has...

AC_ARG_WITH(openssl-digests, [  --with-openssl-digests  Use openssl digests (default=yes)], enable_openssl_digests="no", enable_openssl_digests="no")

src/rdf_digest.c has...

#ifdef HAVE_OPENSSL_DIGESTS
  librdf_digest_openssl_constructor(world);
#endif

src/rdf_digest_internal.h has...

#ifdef HAVE_OPENSSL_DIGESTS
void librdf_digest_openssl_constructor(librdf_world *world);
#endif

but these look indeed to be leftovers, not actual meaningful code, and RELEASE.html says...

   Removed openssl digest support - not used much and an extra large
   dependency. MD5 and SHA1 remain builtin.

so...
