While updating a system that has not seen updates in a while, udev failed to build with the following error:

this would be because you have mismatching gobject-introspection and gobject-introspection-common ebuilds installed -> thus, the bug is in their packages, they need to pull in matching versions, or things will break like this

as in, it's not udev calling the "error no such option: -W" but it's a direct result of mixing incompatible gobject files
Comment 3 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2014-05-21 09:09:57 UTC
At the time when the build failed, I had dev-libs/gobject-introspection-common-1.34.2 installed. After I upgraded dev-libs/gobject-introspection and dev-libs/gobject-introspection-common to 1.38.0, the build succeeded.

Comment 4 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2014-05-21 17:38:06 UTC
g-o-i ebuild already has:
        >=dev-libs/gobject-introspection-common-${PV}

At RDEPEND and DEPEND, then, that shouldn't occur :/
Comment 5 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2014-05-21 20:29:53 UTC
I never had a lower ${PV} of gobject-introspection-common than of gobject-introspection installed. I still maintain that it is a problem in the sys-fs/udev ebuild, presumably the dependency needs to be raised.

I couldn't find the -W option being passed from the systemd tarball for g-ir-scanner. Can you point the file out?
I don't know well enough gobject-introspection 'ebuild' to say if other packages than -common has effect on the args
Comment 7 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-04 19:12:02 UTC
gobject-introspection-common has:

RDEPEND="!<${CATEGORY}/${PN/-common}-${PV}"

but I believe it should have:

RDEPEND="!<${CATEGORY}/${PN/-common}-${PV}"
DEPEND="${RDEPEND}"

or otherwise you can, with a large depgraph, get the order of emerge wrong.

however since we are not clear why this is happening, i've also updated:

  04 Jun 2014; Samuli Suominen <ssuominen@gentoo.org> udev-213.ebuild,
  udev-9999.ebuild:
  Raise gobject-introspection dependency from 1.31.1 to latest stable, which is
  1.38, in attempt of solving bug #510864

i'll let gnome people close this after considering if they want to add that DEPEND="${RDEPEND}" to -common's ebuild to ensure the order is right

can't find other explanation why this is happening, reporter needs to dig up where the -W is coming from, because it's not coming from udev, from some .m4 or other file in the file system, time to grep :-)
Comment 8 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2014-06-05 09:41:18 UTC
To make more clear what the qlop output in comment 3 means:

At the time the udev build failed I had

dev-libs/gobject-introspection-common-1.34.2
dev-libs/gobject-introspection-1.34.2-r1

installed. This is allowed by the dependencies. Regarding where the -W comes from, in attachment 377292 [details], the failing call is

/usr/bin/g-ir-scanner  --c-include=gudev/gudev.h --namespace=GUdev --nsversion=1.0 --libtool="/bin/sh ./libtool"  --include=GObject-2.0   --library=libgudev-1.0.la --pkg-export=gudev-1.0 --warn-all -pipe -Wall -Wextra -Wno-inline -Wundef -Wformat=2 -Wformat-security -Wformat-nonliteral -Wlogical-op -Wsign-compare -Wmissing-include-dirs -Wold-style-definition -Wpointer-arith -Winit-self -Wdeclaration-after-statement -Wfloat-equal -Wsuggest-attribute=noreturn -Wmissing-prototypes -Wstrict-prototypes -Wredundant-decls -Wmissing-declarations -Wmissing-noreturn -Wshadow -Wendif-labels -Wstrict-aliasing=2 -Wwrite-strings -Wno-long-long -Wno-overlength-strings -Wno-unused-parameter -Wno-missing-field-initializers -Wno-unused-result -Werror=overflow -Wnested-externs -ffast-math -fno-common -fdiagnostics-show-option -fno-strict-aliasing -fvisibility=hidden -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections -fstack-protector --param=ssp-buffer-size=4   -D_GUDEV_COMPILATION -D_GUDEV_WORK_AROUND_DEV_T_BUG -I/var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udev-212-r1/work/systemd-212/src -I./src -I/var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udev-212-r1/work/systemd-212/src/gudev -I./src/gudev  /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udev-212-r1/work/systemd-212/src/gudev/gudev.h /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udev-212-r1/work/systemd-212/src/gudev/gudevtypes.h /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udev-212-r1/work/systemd-212/src/gudev/gudevenums.h /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udev-212-r1/work/systemd-212/src/gudev/gudevenumtypes.h /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udev-212-r1/work/systemd-212/src/gudev/gudevclient.h /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udev-212-r1/work/systemd-212/src/gudev/gudevdevice.h /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udev-212-r1/work/systemd-212/src/gudev/gudevenumerator.h /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udev-212-r1/work/systemd-212/src/gudev/gudevclient.c /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udev-212-r1/work/systemd-212/src/gudev/gudevdevice.c /var/tmp/portage/sys-fs/udev-212-r1/work/systemd-212/src/gudev/gudevenumerator.c libgudev-1.0.la --output src/gudev/GUdev-1.0.gir

so presumably g-ir-scanner could not handle the compiler flags being added to the call. Anyway, as the dependency is now raised and the issue is not reproducible with dev-libs/gobject-introspection{-common,}-1.38.0 I will mark this issue as resolved.
Comment 9 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2014-06-05 09:47:57 UTC
thanks. and sorry, could be that i jumped to conclusions too soon, due to seeing similar type of g-ir-scanner unknown flag errors before.
