Description Pat Erley 2014-05-18 20:14:51 UTC
xen-tools-4.4.0-r4 requires seabios-1.7.4 for all non-arm archetectures.
xen-tools-4.4.0-r4[system-qemu] requires qemu, which requires seabios-1.7.3.2

I suspect qemu just needs to be tested with seabios-1.7.4 and have it's dep bumped to >=1.7.3.2.

Emerge --info in additional information. Probably not relevant though.

Reproducible: Always

On bug bug #510492, one of user report xen hvm doesn't work with seabios-1.7.3.2, but works fine with 1.7.4, so I rev-bumped xen-tools, force it depend on >=seabios-1.7.4.

but, I realized I response too quick to that issue, xen upstream are still sticking to 1.7.3.1 as I checked to their source, and the hvm bug still haven't been confirmed by them... I'll try to investigate later, bear with me ..
Comment 3 Pat Erley 2014-05-19 21:13:26 UTC
Pardon if this is completely off base...

Isn't xen-tools[system-qemu] requiring seabios an unnecessary dep as qemu (as a separate package) pulls in seabios already? I understand that this would probably break HVM for system-qemu systems.

Perhaps the quickest path to closing this bug is to move the seabios dep under a qemu? check.

i don't use xen, so i can only speak generally, but if xen itself utilizes seabios in some fashion, the indirect dep graph (xen->qemu->seabios) is irrelevant.

Yeah, what I really meant is, it's my understanding that xen-tools[system-qemu] uses the system qemu instead of the bundled qemu. In that situation, it seems like the system qemu's preferred seabios should be the one that is required. I guess xen might use it's own preferred seabios version with system qemu, which leads to our current situation: xen-tools[system-qemu] cannot be installed(on x86, at least).

Adding qemu? for the seabios dep does not worsen the situation for a system-qemu system (over the current situation), and at the very least, would allow the HVM fix from seabios-1.7.4 to propagate in once it's verified for qemu shipped outside of Xen.

(I've already worked past this bug by adding qemu? to my ebuild in a local overlay, to just quickly get past this issue. Will be checking tonight to see if xen still functions)

seabios is used by xen's hvmloader.

xen-tools has been switched to using sys-firmware/seabios (the system-seabios), and drop the bundled one, see bug #496708

I've spent more time to looking into the hvm problem, turn out that xen-tools have problem with sys-firmware/seabios-1.7.3.2 if USE=binary is enabled, which means using the prebuilt seabios, remove that USE flag, compile seabios, then hvm mode just works fine. In this case I'm thinking about bringing back the bundled seabios for then xen-tools, sine xen upstream has their own seabios-config ..

should be all set now in the tree; thanks for the report!

i checked the qemu-2.0.0 source and it does include seabios-1.7.4, so i should have updated the dep when i version bumped the package

if that's sufficient to make everyone happy, then let's just go with that and continue ignoring the issue :)

Except that's an ABI break to bump that without the Y in X.Y.Z changing in QEMU. Any saved images or snapshots taken with QEMU 2.0.x with an older seabios will now cause QEMU 2.0.x to fail to start with seabios 1.7.4.

how can seabios ever be bumped then while still maintaining snapshot resume ?
