It is not possible to install gentoo 2004.1 on an Adaptec 29320 based system (U320 SCSI adapter), because the initial ramdisk (gentoo.igz) does not include the aic79xx kernel module. This module can be found under ./zisofs/lib/modules/2.4.25-gentoo/kernel/drivers/scsi/aic7xxx/aic79xx.o on the cdrom-filesystem, but it is not included in the initrd, so the cdrom cannot be mounted during the boot. I think this problem was already reported in bug 19544, which is marked as invalid. I think the maintainer did not recognize that though the module is on the cdrom-filesystem, it is not included in the initrd (gentoo.igz). The aic7xxx module is there, but the aic79xx is missing. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: Boot 2004.1 on a cdrom that is connected to an Adaptec 29320 SCSI adapter. Actual Results: The boot stops when the filesystem on the cdrom should be mounted and a ash-prompt appeares. Expected Results: Mount the filesystem on the cdrom.
All of our configs include the driver, it just looks like genkernel needs to include it in the initrd.
Fixed in genkernel-3.0.2b; it should reach Portage from CVS in half-an-hour. Thanks!
