Description Ulrich Fieseler 2013-11-15 21:06:43 UTC
When updating chromium (stable) to version 31.0.1650.48 (from 30.0.1599.101) with gcc 4.5.4 in place (more precisely, set to x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.5.4 using gcc-config), compilation fails with various error messages regarding "#pragma GCC diagnostic" not being allowed within functions. With gcc 4.6.3 (changed using gcc-config to x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-4.6.3) update works fine, as did a reinstall of the old version with gcc 4.5.4.

Chromium's newer ebuilds should be changed to make sure gcc 4.6.3 (or whatever least version appropriate) is used (like libreoffice's ebuild does). See bug #475494 for a similar problem.

Reproducible: Always

I am hesitant to add a dependency on gcc; in theory you could build chromium with another compiler (like clang).

Maybe a pkg_pretend check on CXX?

Totally agreed. :) Dependency is out of question, and I'd be fine with a pkg_pretend check similar to one in libreoffice, but I'd still prefer to avoid it - for multiple reasons, clang being one of them.

Actually please test this and report if it works (it does for me):

  chromium-32.0.1700.14.ebuild, chromium-33.0.1707.0.ebuild:
Reconfigure bundled ffmpeg to enable build with gcc-4.5, bug #491378 by
  Ulrich Fieseler.

I wonder what happens with gcc-4.4 and older... obviously we can't support all versions of gcc, and if chromium compiles with an old enough version it'd be a further argument against any pkg_pretend check.
Comment 4 Paweł Hajdan, Jr. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-11-18 04:42:27 UTC
Currently chromium doesn't compile with gcc-4.4 even with above changes, but it does with some small patches. I plan to take that upstream.

By the way, I hit bug #357287 while trying to emerge gcc-4.4 on my system. Adding -mno-avx to CFLAGS in make.conf worked for me as a workaround.
Comment 5 Ulrich Fieseler 2013-11-19 00:24:06 UTC
Building 32.0.1700.14 with gcc 4.5.4 works (after adding it as well as =dev-libs/protobuf-2.5.0 to package.accept_keywords) and can be run (simple go/no-go check). Building 33.0.1707.0 fails (having added it to package.unmask first, of course) after quite a while of compiling with error message '../../chrome/browser/ui/libgtk2ui/gconf_titlebar_listener.h:8:32: fatal error: gconf/gconf-client.h: No such file or directory', so that's probably a different problem (and it occurs with gcc 4.6.3 as well!). See attachment for log with gcc 4.5.4 (compressed because of its length).

I think this is fixed now with chromium-32.x stable.
