When Qt 5 hits the Portage tree, please try again then; and if it is still broken by then, comment on this bug and I will reopen it. It's too early to expect Qt 5 to be properly supported; and given it is still in an overlay, it can be seen as unsupported by design. If you want this to work; ask upstream to support Qt 5 (if they're not already working on it), and keep trying later versions of vlc. TIA.

I also had this problem with compiling VLC with qt5 support, but I stucked on 'configure' phase. Configure script incorrectly searches for Qt<module>.pc file instead of Qt5<module>.pc. Patch from comment #10 fixed that for me for version 2.1.2. Please apply it. :-) BTW similar fixes were done upstream in few commits from 2013-08-27 to 2013-09-08 and were applied to 2.2.0 version. Patch should not be needed for this and newer versions of VLC.

Frank, this is another bug known upstream: https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/9410 Qt5 support in VLC 2.1 series is not complete, it is 100% ready in 3.0 branch (not officially released, yet): https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/8532 Therefore I think Qt5 USE flag should never be available for VLC 2.x as it is not offering some features of Qt4 USE flag. BTW, I was able to play a video in the main window using Qt5 when compiled VLC 3.0 from GIT. Qt5 is still masked in portage, and it is not officially supported in VLC 2.1.x by upstream. There were more problems with Qt5, and upstream devs solved them in 2.2.x branch only ([2] as an example). To avoid backporting many commits and additional work for proxy maintainers, I decided to drop support for qt5 use flag in VLC 2.1.x.
