From strace: access("/home/reinis/.mozilla", F_OK) = 0 access("/home/reinis/.mozilla/plugins", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) access("/usr/lib64/firefox/browser/plugins", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) access("/usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins", F_OK) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or directory) So it is looking for the plugins in the wrong place - they are in /usr/lib64/nsbrowser/plugins. Temporary workaround is to symlink /usr/lib64/nsbrowser, but the proper fix should change where firefox looks for them.
ln -s /usr/lib/nsbrowser/plugins /usr/lib/firefox/browser/ that will fix the problem but this needs to get fixed in the ebuild

That one's not going to work -- /usr/lib[64]/mozilla/plugins needs to stay a valid path (even though all nsplugins in portage shouldn't use it); we need to append /usr/lib[64]/nsbrowser/plugins to the list rather than replace an existing path..
or may be one should just specify the NS_SYSTEM_PLUGINS_DIR variable
