duplicity-0.6.21 (currently unstable) is suffering from a nasty bug which renders duplicity quite useless if used with num-retries > 1. While explicitly setting num-retries to 1 works around this bug, it's a trap which is not acceptable for a backup solution.

The fix has been merged into 0.6.22 released on AUG-22 - see the upstream bug on https://bugs.launchpad.net/duplicity/+bug/1115715 for details.

Please consider version bumping to 0.6.22 and masking 0.6.21 in order to save duplicity users from being bitten.
