Description Fabian Köster 2013-08-21 10:55:24 UTC
I am currently testing GNOME 3.8 and often the UI freezes. This does not seem to be related to some special actions by the user because it happens sometimes when I am working at the computer but also sometimes after idle when I come back to keyboard.

Also, sometimes I am able to change to the text console and restart gdm but sometimes i can only cold reboot the machine.

I am not sure whether this is a bug in gnome, mutter, xorg or something else so I am using GNOME as component first, because it does not happen with Xfce for example.

I looked in to the logs (syslog, dmesg, xorg, gdm log) but could not find anything helpful. Please give me a hint on how to debug this. Please let me know if you need more information.

Some versions:

gnome-base/gnome-shell-3.8.4 was built with the following:
USE="bluetooth i18n networkmanager" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 -python2_6"

gnome-base/gdm-3.8.4 was built with the following:
USE="fallback gnome-shell introspection ipv6 tcpd -accessibility -audit -debug -fprint -plymouth (-selinux) -smartcard -test -xinerama"

x11-wm/mutter-3.8.4 was built with the following:
USE="introspection -debug -test

x11-base/xorg-server-1.14.2 was built with the following:
USE="ipv6 kdrive nptl suid udev xorg -dmx -doc -minimal (-selinux) -static-libs -tslib -xnest -xvfb"
LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,-z,lazy"

x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.21.11 was built with the following:
USE="dri sna udev -glamor -uxa -xvmc"
LDFLAGS="-Wl,-O1 -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,-z,lazy"

Reproducible: Always

I think it's:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=704646

that should be solved as soon as any of us is able to apply that reversion patch from gnome-3.8 branch that is causing lots of problems

Thanks for your fast answer! I agree that the upstream issue could be my problem. I will try the patch later to see if it solves my problems. Is there a problem in applying the patch or did nobody from Gentoo try it?
Comment 3 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2013-08-21 12:25:55 UTC
Feel free to go ahead and apply it (you will need to restart gnome-shell after that, probably gdm too)

Done. Applied the patch as follows:

1.) Download https://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=251832
2.) Copy it to /etc/portage/patches/gnome-base/gnome-shell-3.8.4/Revert-background-fix-asynchronous-management-of-b.patch
3.) emerge -1 gnome-shell
3.) Restart gnome-shell

I will now test it for 2 days and see if any freeze occurs.
Comment 5 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2013-08-21 12:36:37 UTC
please ensure you see the patch being applied at prepare phase when "emerge -1 gnome-shell"

Yes, it has been applied.
Comment 7 Rémi Cardona (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-08-22 08:57:44 UTC
I'm definitely having a similar issue which forces me to SIGKILL gnome-shell every now and then. I'll try the patch, time permitting.
Comment 8 Fabian Köster 2013-08-23 08:43:25 UTC
So.. my observation after 2 days of heavy use with the gnome-shell patch applied is as follows:

The number of freezes was drastically reduced to 1. This freeze was after waking up from suspend and I could only perform a cold reboot to regain access. My assumption is that this is a bug in xorg (I recently upgraded my system to xorg-server-1.14.2 to see if it fixed gnome-shell freezes, stable list #475480). I will downgrade to stable xorg and see if all lockups are gone afterwards.
Comment 9 Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2013-08-23 08:48:47 UTC
Usually bumping mesa helps (or changes things)... but it's a separate problem (the problem with gnome-shell crashers/hangs is that they can be caused by many different things :S)
Comment 10 Rémi Cardona (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-08-23 08:53:07 UTC
So far, no freezes after an evening of heavy use. Looks promising.

Yeah. What I wanted to say was: The patch fixes the bug in gnome-shell but I have another bug in xorg or something on my system.

Oops, I forgot you thank you on ChangeLog :@

Sorry a lot. Anyway, thanks for reporting and testing :)
