There is no direct dependence of VLC on gettext, but compilation of 9999 version fails with the following error:

***** autopoint *****
***** PWD: /var/portage/tmp/portage/media-video/vlc-9999/work/vlc-9999
***** autopoint --force

autopoint: *** The AM_GNU_GETTEXT_VERSION declaration in your configure.ac
               file requires the infrastructure from gettext-0.18.3 but this version
               is older. Please upgrade to gettext-0.18.3 or newer.
autopoint: *** Stop.

Not for me. Compile fails for other reasons.

I think i fixed this when it failed to build for me, never the less the package needs maintainer :(
