Description Marko Vendelin 2013-07-04 07:54:37 UTC
During installation of app-misc/screen, SetUID is set leading to the following permissions:

ls -l $EPREFIX/usr/bin/screen
-rws--x--x 1 uname gname 358728 Jul 4 13:46 /.../usr/bin/screen

This makes it impossible to use the compiled Gentoo Prefix by other users (except the one that compiled it). It would be advantageous to remove such SetUID in prefix environment.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge app-misc/screen
2. login as other user [user2] into the system
3. user2, after sourcing $EPREFIX/startprefix, run screen
Actual Results:
user2 cannot use screen (permission denied to change files in his/her ~/.screen directory)

Expected Results:
it should be possible to share prefix environment and use screen from that

I think you're looking for the multiuser USE-flag, aren't you?
Comment 2 Marko Vendelin 2013-07-04 18:10:46 UTC
no, I don't think so. I could be mistaken since I'm new to gentoo prefix, but multiuser seems to be something different (according to description is for sharing seconds between users). I'm looking foot a way to use screen without sharing sessions. so, user1 could run screen as well as user2 without sharing. the catch is that screen in prefix is installed with setuid (even if you don't specify multiuser flag). this setuid makes it run as a process of the user that compiled prefix environment. I would like to run it without setuid in this case since it would allow me to share compiled prefix with others.

now I'm not sure whether multiuser flag is set by default. I'll have to try to compile again by specifically disabeling it

Comment 3 Fabian Groffen gentoo-dev 2013-07-05 06:01:27 UTC
I see, the setuid isn't what makes sense for an offset install, I guess.

For Prefix, multiuser is enabled by default (can't be disabled). Not sure why it is necessary though. This needs some research.
Comment 4 Fabian Groffen gentoo-dev 2013-07-10 20:12:01 UTC
Ok, I fixed this. You will need USE=multiuser though.
