Description Jim Faulkner 2013-05-26 20:20:27 UTC
I have both the "wifi" and "networkmanager" use flags set, and am using the amd64/13.0/desktop/kde profile. After emerging kde-meta, the network management applet kde-misc/networkmanagement isn't available. It is intuitive that wifi users would want network management to be available on their desktop. Also, it is a waste of time to make everyone google for the applet name, especially when "emerge --search networkmanager" doesn't show kde-misc/networkmanagement.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 Chris Reffett (RETIRED) gentoo-dev Security 2013-05-26 20:53:16 UTC
kde-meta and the other kde metapackages are only for pulling in packages from the core KDE SC (all of which are in kde-base/, and networkmanagement is in kde-misc), which is why it's not there presently. That said, I do agree that networkmanagement could be more clearly indicated. The other problem is that this isn't appropriate to add this as a DEPEND/RDEPEND to a non-meta package since this isn't even a runtime-only dep. Perhaps an elog would be appropriate, or we could reconsider our meta-package rules. Rest of KDE team: thoughts? I could also live with a kde-utilities kind of meta package with all sorts of USE flags, but I don't think we have enough of said packages to make it worthwhile.

Its already described in the official wiki: http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NetworkManager

Yes please! We already have plenty of meta USE flags which break our "meta is only for X" rule, and I think it does add a lot to the user experience.
Comment 4 Johannes Huber (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-07-25 22:05:17 UTC
We decided in the meeting.
1.) add networkmanager use flag to pull in kde-misc/networkmanagement
2.) add bluetooth use flag to pull in net-wireless/bluedevil

We decided not on which (meta-)package. Another idea which came in my mind after the meeting, to add the flag to kde-base/solid-runtime.

Thanks for reporting. This is fixed in cvs and git now. Please sync in some hours to get the change.
