Just to reiterate, the issue still occurs without distcc cross compiling and with -j1 (regarding my emerge --info). The problem is eventually addressed here, http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=599680, and some extensive testing there claim otherwise (eventual conclusion: that -O0 vs -O1 or -O2 simply remove the SSE instructions in the tests used). Upstream's mention of this issue seems hit or miss. Suggested Debian patches towards the bottom seem to generalize into i386 env host tests for MMX/SSE/SSE+ support and I don't believe would resolve the issue any better for Gentoo with i686 hosts that may only have SSE/MMX. Not sure the ideal scenario here, the sse2 useflag patches I provided (which still are reliant upon the user to knowingly set -sse2 but definitely keeps SSE2 out of the build while allowing SSE) or to modify the CMake macro with -O0 on the respective gcc SSE tests.
