Description William Throwe 2013-05-05 18:59:40 UTC
After updating to media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.27-r1 and media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.27-r2 amixer stops giving useful output, but instead always reports "Could not find the specified element". For example:

$ amixer cget numid=2
Could not find the specified element
$ amixer cset numid=2 on
Could not find the specified element

The second command does, however, actually succeed at changing the setting.

$ emerge --info alsa-lib alsa-utils

media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.27-r2 was built with the following:
USE="-alisp -debug -doc -python" PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python2_7" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7"

media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.27-r1 was built with the following:
USE="libsamplerate ncurses -doc -nls (-selinux)"
Comment 1 William Throwe 2013-05-05 21:31:56 UTC
Downgrading to media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.26-r2 without downgrading alsa-lib fixes the problem, so this is a problem in the newer alsa-utils, not alsa-lib.

Patch fixing the problem

The bad commit is in upstream's git repository (git://git.alsa-project.org/alsa-utils.git) is

commit e2eab09c1d7963580d9ff3ec2fbf814a842d2881
Author: Jaroslav Kysela <perex@perex.cz>
Date:   Tue Apr 9 18:38:58 2013 +0200

    amixer: Use the alsa-lib functions for id print and parse and value parse

    Signed-off-by: Jaroslav Kysela <perex@perex.cz>

Attached is a patch that reverts one line of that commit and fixes the problem in amixer. I have not done much testing to make sure this doesn't break anything else.

I'd report this upstream, but their bugtracker is down.
