After updating to media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.27-r1 and media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.27-r2 amixer stops giving useful output, but instead always reports "Could not find the specified element". Downgrading to media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.26-r2 without downgrading alsa-lib fixes the problem, so this is a problem in the newer alsa-utils, not alsa-lib.
