Description Marc Joliet 2013-04-09 16:04:21 UTC
Some version of x11-wm/awesome after 3.4.11 adds "NoDisplay=true" to the xsession file at /usr/share/xsessions/awesome.desktop. This results in awesome not being available when using lightdm as display manager (don't know about other DMs, but other than slim, I suspect they will behave the same).

The upstream bug in URL reveals why this was done. Perhaps the desktop file could be patched until this is resolved upstream.

This change was especially bad for me, because as a result lightdm-gtk-greeter repeatedly crashed (actually, lightdm keeps respawning it, so it keeps crashing indefinitely until I stop it).

I only figured this out after eventually downgrading to lightdm-gtk-greeter-1.1.6, where I noticed that awesome wasn't showing up in the list of desktop sessions.

As a FYI: if I understand correctly the crash itself might be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/lightdm-gtk-greeter/+bug/1161883, but I haven't verified that yet. I might take the time later today. The crash is only of secondary importance here, anyway. If I *can* verify it, I'll open another bug for reference.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Prerequisites: using lightdm-1.4.0 + lightdm-gtk-greeter-1.3.1-r1
1. Upgrade from awesome-3.4.11 to 3.4.15.
2. Exit the desktop session.
3. Restart lightdm.
Actual Results:
Lightdm-gtk-greeter starts segfaulting indefinitely. Alternatively, awesome doesn't show up in the list of available desktop sessions (see description).

Expected Results:
Lightdm restarts normally.

x11-wm/awesome-3.4.15 was built with the following:
USE="dbus doc (multilib) -gnome" ABI_X86="64"
Comment 1 Nikolaj Šujskij 2013-04-10 05:52:57 UTC
It has been dropped in 3.5: http://goo.gl/Vsq5b
Probably we should just sed this line out and forget about it.
Comment 2 Maxim Koltsov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-04-10 19:34:10 UTC
Fixed in 3.4.15, enjoy.
Comment 3 Marc Joliet 2013-04-10 22:23:29 UTC
Thanks a lot :) ! (Although: I would have expected a revbump.)

> I would have expected a revbump.

We (well, I) decided against it, since it's a minor change, not touching actual codebase. And revbump would require all the awesome users to rebuild it for no apparent reason or benefit (as nobody has complained since January).
