Description Alan Mackenzie 2013-02-25 10:51:04 UTC
In a system with kernel 3.7.9 and udev-171-r10, uncomment this line in /etc/conf.d/udev:
   udev_debug="YES"
, to get debugging output in /run/udev/udev.log.

Reboot the system. /run/udev/udev.log contains only ~55 lines looking like this in their entirety:

1361736665.547175 [1761] parse_file: reading '/lib/udev/rules.d/10-dm.rules' as rules file
1361736665.547289 [1761] parse_file: reading '/run/udev/rules.d/10-root-link.rules' as rules file
[ .... ]
1361736665.553901 [1761] parse_file: reading '/lib/udev/rules.d/95-upower-wup.rules' as rules file
1361736665.553924 [1761] parse_file: reading '/lib/udev/rules.d/97-bluetooth-hid2hci.rules' as rules file
1361736665.553971 [1761] udev_rules_new: rules use 108624 bytes tokens (9052 * 12 bytes), 31856 bytes buffer
1361736665.553977 [1761] udev_rules_new: temporary index used 48860 bytes (2443 * 20 bytes)
1361736665.554010 [1761] main: error creating epoll fd: Function not implemented

It seems udev has decided to abort. As a result, the devices in /dev are left usable only by root.

The same udev-171-r10 works fine with kernel 3.6.11.

sys-fs/udev-171-r10 was built with the following:
USE="gudev hwdb introspection keymap (multilib) rule_generator -action_modeswitch -build -debug -edd (-extras) -floppy (-selinux) -test"

Current stable is 197-r8, we have no plans on backporting to 171 anymore.
Comment 4 Samuli Suominen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-03-01 09:08:49 UTC
If this is not about too new kernel for too old udev, this could be about missing EPOLL=y in the kernel .config

Let us know if there are problems with >=sys-fs/udev-197-r8

And let us know if udev's ebuild need check for EPOLL kernel .config option
Comment 5 Alan Mackenzie 2013-03-01 17:30:01 UTC
Hi,

yes, my 3.7.9 kernel .config was indeed lacking CONFIG_EPOLL=y. As soon as I rebuilt the kernel with that option enabled, udev started working properly. That is, udev-197-r8 - I didn't get to test the rebuilt kernel with 171-r10.

I think it would be helpful to check for CONFIG_EPOLL=y in udev's ebuild, though that probably wouldn't have helped me much. The kernel's help text for EPOLL isn't actually as helpful as it might be.

Sorry for the mistaken bug report, and thanks for helping me fix it.

It would probably be best to follow the defaults for options behind CONFIG_EXPERT, unless you actually happen to be an expert on kernel options.

i've added same check to dbus a while back. added now to udev too -- checked sources and epoll is used everywhere
