As far as I am aware, mdm (the display manager you want) is missing a lot of the functionality (e.g. networking) that kdm has. It also doesn't seem to be actively developed anymore. However, it still may be great for many people. I too would be interested in an ebuild, just to try it out. Last upstream release (0.0.3) 2+ years ago, no ebuild attached here either. WONTFIX.
