Description Tony Vroon (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-02-11 13:05:12 UTC
Due to a lack of serialisation in modem-to-port mappings, two modem plugins can end up trying to control the same port. This results in colourful fireworks displays like the below:
mm_serial_port_close(): (ttyUSB3) serial port closed
modem-manager[27312]: <debug> [1360339252.910559] [mm-manager.c:714] supports_callback(): (tty/ttyUSB3): plugin 0x7f89a8007980 (Cinterion) existing 0x7f89a8007a80 (Sierra) info->best 0$

ERROR:mm-manager.c:715:supports_callback: code should not be reached

Based on a rather circuitous chain of bug reports, I ended up with an upstream commit that should address this. This is linked in the URL field for your convenience. Would it be possible to have a 0.6.0.0-r1 with this commit please?

The current failure mode, combined with NetworkManager restarting modemmanager immediately results in a rapid ping/pong that ultimately confuses the firmware on my Sierra 8790 enough that it jettisons the USB interfaces and plays dead.
My initial thought was that the card might have failed, and as such it was replaced with an 8795V. Based on this, I am reasonably confident that the failure is in software, not hardware.

Upgrading to the pre-releases drove the modem correctly, but ultimately confused cinnamon's NM applet and left me unable to initiate the 3G link.

Here is the actual Gnome bug report, which is rather more informative then the Launchpad bug I initially found:

Fixed, thanks for finding the patch.
