Description David Williams 2013-01-10 11:09:25 UTC
I have a server without ipv6 support, use flag -ipv6 and no ipv6 in the kernel, and nmap 6.01 gives the error:

Error compiling our pcap filter: icmp6 not supported

I've given emerge --info for a 64bit system but I've also had the bug on a couple of 32 bit systems.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Compile nmap on a system with -ipv6
2. run nmap eg 192.168.32.0/24

Actual Results:
3. observe error message
Starting Nmap 6.01 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2013-01-10 11:03 GMT
Error compiling our pcap filter: icmp6 not supported

Expected Results:
nmap should have scanned the subnet

emerge --info

I can confirm this behavior.
Comment 2 Panagiotis Christopoulos (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-01-10 12:29:50 UTC
There is also bug #445734 . Don't have time now to check how related it is.
Comment 3 Lars Wendler (Polynomial-C) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-01-10 13:15:22 UTC
This only happens when net-libs/libpcap was compiled with ipv6 USE flag being disabled.
Seems to be a similar problem to bug #421003
Comment 4 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-01-15 17:04:03 UTC
It's the same upstream bug as bug #417759 which was apparently unfixed because of bug #445734. I have "fixed" it again now, but it should really be fixed upstream, i.e. in net-libs/libpcap.

I don't see any mention this being reported upstream on bug #417759 ...?

> I have "fixed" it again now,

do I have to say that I'm among those unhappy with the "fix"? :-)

> but it should really be fixed upstream, i.e. in net-libs/libpcap.

... it can hardly be fixed if it is not known (reported)

please could you post a link to the appropriate report so we can watch the status, or are we waiting for Godot as the upstream report does not exist yet?
