Description Renato Alves 2012-12-19 16:09:38 UTC
This problem is visible on new installations and can be hidden when doing upgrade due to the behavior described in part 2.

The first part of the problem is that the modules list is not updated. This causes init scripts to fail because modprobe cannot find the libafs module.
Running depmod -a manually solves this issue.

The second part of the problem is that even if openafs-kernel is unmerged the module /lib/modules/<kernel>/fs/openafs/libafs.ko is left behind.
If at any later point depmod -a is executed modules.dep will include libafs even if the package is no longer installed on the system.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Part 1 (depmod -a required):
1. remove openafs-kernel if installed, make sure libafs.ko is not present in /lib/modules/<kernel>/fs/openafs/ and run depmod -a
2. try modprobe libafs (should fail since no module should be installed)
3. emerge openafs-kernel
4. modprobe libafs (should fail)
5. /etc/init.d/openafs-client start (should fail with "FATAL: Module libafs not found.")
6. insmod /lib/modules/<kernel>/fs/openafs/libafs.ko (should work)
7. rmmod /lib/modules/<kernel>/fs/openafs/libafs.ko (should work)
8. run depmod -a
9. /etc/init.d/openafs-client start (should no longer complain about libafs not being found)

Part 2 (module left behind on removal):
1. emerge openafs-kernel
2. check that file exists - /lib/modules/<kernel>/fs/openafs/libafs.ko
3. emerge --unmerge openafs-kernel
4. check that file still exists - /lib/modules/<kernel>/fs/openafs/libafs.ko
Actual Results:
modprobe fails if depmod -a is not executed manually after installation of openafs-kernel

libafs.ko is left on the system after removal of openafs-kernel

Expected Results:
modprobe should work without requiring a manual depmod -a, i.e. depmod -a should happen as part of the installation of openafs-kernel.

libafs.ko should be removed when openafs-kernel is removed.

I confirm Part1 of this bug. However due to changing security requirements at work, I may no longer be able to connect my Gentoo systems to the company network, so afs on Gentoo may become moot to me.

should be all set now in the tree; thanks for the report!
