I've just compiled awesome-3.5_rc1-r1 with gnome use flag enabled. Default rc.lua uses awesome.quit command in menu and keyboard shortcut, however that command only closes awesome but not the entire gnome session (as is described at https://makandracards.com/makandra/1367-running-the-awesome-window-manager-within-gnome in caveat section) My actual workaround is to use gnome-session-quit --logout as a floating window, this successfully log out to xdm asking for a confirmation(gdm in my case).
