Description Mark Dominik Bürkle 2012-10-12 06:02:07 UTC
as shown in Bug#424431 (with exim)
as shown in Bug#426962 (with sendmail)
the default permissions of /var/spool/mail/ are not ok: it must be group-writeable (chmod g+w) for group mail (chown :mail) and therefore it should be sticky (chmod o+t), too.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge system
2. emerge mailer e.g. mail-mta/exim-4.77
3. create mail to local user, e.g. echo testmailbody | mail user
4. see local delivery failing in logs, e.g. Permission denied: creating lock file hitching post /var/mail/user.lock...
Actual Results:
mails cannot be delivered via /var/spool/mail/
(/var/mail is a symlink to /var/spool/mail/)

Expected Results:
mail should be deliverable in a freshly installed system
(at least when exim.conf:routers:localuser:group=mail is set)

/var/spool/mail should be owned by :mail and mode 01775 (u/g/o=rwx/rwx/r-t)

for mail delivery in a standard way: mail transfer agent / mail delivery agent like exim or sendmail do a set(e)uid to the delivered user (with set(e)gid to mail via liblockfile resp. /usr/bin/dotlockfile?) before they create the lockfile (/var/spool/mail/user.lock) and then add mails to the users mailbox (/var/mail/user or /var/spool/mail/user).
With mode 0(1)755 this does not work.

mail clients like mailx-8.1.2.20050715-r6 also try to create a lockfile on behalf of the user invoking mailx before they access the user's mailbox in /var/spool/mail/user,
with mode 0(1)755 this does not work.

The command lockfile (/usr/bin/lockfile) is setGid mail.
The command dotlockfile (/usr/bin/dotlockfile) is setGid mail. This seems to be used by /usr/bin/mail (via liblockfile) to create the user.lock lockfiles.
