Description Clemente Aguiar 2012-09-26 14:56:59 UTC
After upgrade of squid, at startup the following messages are reported in cache.log:

2012/09/26 13:04:51| pinger: Initialising ICMP pinger ...
2012/09/26 13:04:51| cc(82) Open: icmp_sock: (1) Operation not permitted
2012/09/26 13:04:51| pinger: Unable to start ICMP pinger.
2012/09/26 13:04:51| cc(122) Open: icmp_sock: (1) Operation not permitted
2012/09/26 13:04:51| pinger: Unable to start ICMPv6 pinger.
2012/09/26 13:04:51| FATAL: pinger: Unable to open any ICMP sockets.

This is related to the permissions of /usr/libexec/squid/pinger:

# ll /usr/libexec/squid/pinger
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 72392 Sep 26 12:51 /usr/libexec/squid/pinger

Setting permissions as follows solved the problem:

# chmod 4755 /usr/libexec/squid/pinger

Now the log looks like this:

2012/09/26 15:53:29 kid1| IcmpSquid.cc(255) Open: Pinger socket opened on FD 17
...
2012/09/26 15:53:29| pinger: Initialising ICMP pinger ...
2012/09/26 15:53:29| pinger: ICMP socket opened.

Reproducible: Always

Here are the use flags for squid:

# emerge -pv squid

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
