After upgrading to =sys-apps/systemd-189-r2 running journalctl as root shows an empty journal, but the journal located at /run/log/journal/.../system.journal does not seem to be empty (size is >=1.2M). Jupp, rebuilding with USE=lzma solves the problem. I even did not restart any services! Now executing journalctl works as expected. Thus, it seems that disabling lzma (i.e. USE=-lzma) only effects those parts of the code used for compiling and linking journalctl, while the journal itself is still stored using lzma compression? Unfortunately, i cannot try -9999 from mgorny repo, because this is my production machine at work and i will not install any live-ebuilds on that machine, sorry.
