The installation instructions on <http://www.gentoo.org/doc/build.html> contains the following phrase (section 8, last paragraph): "After you execute these commands, you'll be "inside" your new Gentoo Linux environment, and the last step before we can grab the Portage tree and bootstrap is to configure your network settings." This is both confusing as the network interface IS already configured (providing you followed the instructions in section 4) and also the 1.0_rc6-r14 tarball doesn't contain the ifconfig command so it is not possible to configure the network interface. If you refer to specific settings other than address and route (which are already set) that should probably be better emphasized.
