The current stable splashutils-1.5.4.4 fails to build. The issue is described in bug #408283 (left open for some reason) and fixed with splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1. Please stabilize splashutils-1.5.4.4-r1.

With my xz patch from <a href=https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=417375>bug 417375</a> it's all builds and work.

splash_geninitramfs -v --xz -g /boot/fbsplash-all-1024x768 -r 1024x768 --no8bpp --all /etc/splash
or
cd /etc/splash
splash_geninitramfs -v --xz -g /boot/fbsplash-natural_gentoo-1600x900 -r 1600x900 natural_gentoo
