Description Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2012-06-03 15:50:59 UTC
Beginnign with 12.6_beta, x11-drivers/ati-drivers drops support for all hardware prior to Radeon 5400 series.

At least the ati-faq needs to be updated. Possibly it would be a good idea to produce an elog message or a news item. Your opinions?
Comment 1 nm (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-06-03 21:19:59 UTC
on the GDP side, we can update the docs once that version is marked stable, or maybe sometime during the ~arch phase.

on the user side, a news item/elog message is definitely a good idea.
Comment 2 Enrico Tagliavini 2012-06-04 07:02:47 UTC
It is my opinion (and not only mine: see bug #339625 ) ati-faq should just be deleted. I suggest to do a page on the official gentoo wiki instead. I will be happy to contribute.

Side notes: I will not bump 12.6 beta (for now at least and if X11 team agree with me), but I will bump it in july if AMD will not do a stable release. But be aware: my hardware might be unsupported now. If so I will simply step down as an ati-drivers maintainer. I have no chance to update given I have a laptop.

When bumping I will obviously update the elog too.
Comment 3 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2012-06-04 13:39:04 UTC
As there is no ati-drivers version in the tree that works with xorg-server-1.12 (which will go stable in bug 419473), possibly it would be a good idea to include 12.6_beta. I can prepare a news item that informs users about the change.

I would be ok with marking the ati-faq as obsolete and pointing users to a wiki page instead.

Ok then I missed the xorg stabilization plan. I will try to package ati-drivers-12.6_beta. Cross your fingers and hope this does support my hardware :)

ati-drivers-12.6_beta first try ebuild

This is my last contribution to ati-drivers. AMD dropped support for my 1 year 2 months old laptop! I'm very sorry for gentoo users, but I will not buy a new pc with a newer AMD video card. Anyway this is what I've done. The ebuild seems to work, but I can't test on runtime.

What is missing is the change needed to elog.

@X11 team: please remove me from ati-drivers metadata.xml.

what? we're not planning on marking the FAQ as obsolete. once 12.6 is in the tree, we just have to change a couple lines in the doc at the xorg/ati DRI section to reflect driver support. nothing that requires getting rid of the doc entirely. that's ludicrous.

we don't need to be CCed on this bug as long as it's still an ebuild maintenance issue. once stuff is in the tree, feel free to re-CC the docs team and/or open a new bug, or find us on IRC/email. we'll be around to take care of the update.

x11-drivers/ati-drivers-12.6_beta is now unmasked in tree and will go stable soon. The ebuild already notifies users of the hardware support changes.

The ati-faq support table needs an update,
* change R800 to Evergreen,
* change R900 to Northern Islands
* a new row "Southern Islands" for RadeonHD 7000 series
* drop AMD DRI from 2000, 3000 and 4000 series.
Comment 8 Enrico Tagliavini 2012-06-13 16:16:52 UTC
The DESCRIPTION in the ebuild should be changed too:
DESCRIPTION="AMD precompiled drivers for radeon r800 (HD 5000 Series) and newer chipsets"

done. back to you guys!

Since 12.6 is now marked stable and is with elog notice

http://sources.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewvc.cgi/gentoo-x86/x11-drivers/ati-drivers/ati-drivers-12.6.ebuild?view=markup
line 277

and 12.6_beta has been made unstable, I think this is resolved

Looks like AMD continues support
Radeon HD 4000 Series
Radeon HD 3000 Series
Radeon HD 2000 Series
Radeon HD Series AGP
Mobility Radeon HD 4000 Series
Mobility Radeon HD 3000 Series
Mobility Radeon HD 2000 Series:

I try amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.run on Mobility Radeon HD 4300/4500 . I works as expected .
Comment 12 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2012-08-03 11:23:08 UTC
That is already available as x11-drivers/ati-drivers-12.6_beta_pre897

Dont' be too happy. They only do security updates to the legacy driver. This means no new Xorg/kernel support. The kernel support can be added with a patch usually, but the new Xorg support is impossibile to add. So when gentoo will update to xorg-server-1.13 your only option will be the FOSS radeon driver.
Comment 14 Chí-Thanh Christopher Nguyễn gentoo-dev 2012-11-11 01:09:37 UTC
Advertising the 12.6 legacy to users is maybe not a good idea, as it will never work with xorg-server-1.13 and even with 1.12 has problems (bug 436252).

So all work for this bug is done.
