Description Arvydas Sidorenko 2012-05-27 13:21:13 UTC
nmap has a runtime dependency of net-libs/libpcap compiled with ipv6 flag, otherwise most of the commands, especially the ones requiring root privileges fails with the following error:
Error compiling our pcap filter: icmp6 not supported

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
# nmap -sS -P0 -T4 -v -A -p0-65535 www.xxx.xx

Starting Nmap 6.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2012-05-27 14:40 CEST
Initiating Parallel DNS resolution of 1 host. at 14:40
Completed Parallel DNS resolution of 1 host. at 14:40, 0.01s elapsed
Initiating SYN Stealth Scan at 14:40
Scanning www.xxx.xx (xx.193.193.123) [65536 ports]

Comment 3 Damien Hammer 2012-06-23 20:18:34 UTC
Confirmed. This happens to me too. I think it is because it is compiled for IPv6 support even though I explicitly unset that use flag on my system. However, the Nmap ebuild doesn't use that use flag and it must have been compiled with IPv6 support. Add the use flag for toggling support during build time should fix the issue. Some other people where having this problem and proposed this fix but they were compiling from source so to fix it here it must have the IPv6 support toggled by a use flag to prevent it from having that support while nothing else has that support. I am not sure why no one else has come to confirm the bug yet but I confirm it.
Comment 4 Damien Hammer 2012-06-23 20:58:13 UTC
I got the sources from portage of nmap and libpcap then compiled libpcap without ipv6 support. I then compiled nmap without ipv6 support and told it to use the libpcap compiled earlier instead of the build-in version. Even in doing all of this the same error message is printed whenever it runs. So it isn't just that it doesn't pull in libpcap or that it insists on using ipv6 because even when those are disabled or I use a version of libpcap from the portage tree there are still errors. I am not sure what the error is.

Just got caught out by this one at a *very* inopportune moment. Too late to save face now, but please let me know if I can help with debugging or whatnot.

Fixed in 6.00 and 6.01. Thanks for reporting and for the patch. And apologies for the long wait.
Comment 7 Mohaa 2012-12-02 17:45:16 UTC
I run through this today and had to enable the ipv6 flag on libpcap to get to install net-analyzer/nmap-6.01.
What is the point in enabling more USE flags that you don't have interest in ?
