passenger fails to build here - the build output I get is this:

Which version of asciidoc do you have installed?

Ugh, good point. I wasn't on the latest version. For some reason, emerge -uDav world did not pull in the ascii doc update. Before I had 8.5.3, now with 8.6.5 it works.

May be a depend would be good which makes sure a version is available which makes passenger compile?

That depend is already there, but only for USE=doc. So the real problem is that the package tries to build documentation even with USE=-doc.

Now fixed in passenger-3.0.12.
