I noticed that when building glibc with 4.7 I get this warning from portage: * QA Notice: This package installs one or more file names containing * characters that are not encoded with the UTF-8 encoding. * * usr/lib/debug/usr/lib64/misc/glibc/getconf/POSIX_V7_LP64_OFF64\ufffd.debug * usr/lib64/misc/glibc/getconf/POSIX_V7_LP64_OFF64\ufffd During the strip phase: strip: x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-strip --strip-unneeded -R .comment -R .GCC.command.line [...] /usr/lib64/misc/glibc/getconf/POSIX_V6_LP64_OFF64 /usr/lib64/misc/glibc/getconf/POSIX_V7_LP64_OFF64 (U+FFFD being the unicode replacement character, circle with a ? in it) Don't know if this is an actual problem, just thought it was weird.
i'll look as soon as i can `emerge =gcc-4.7*` ;)

i've rebuilt glibc-2.15 at this point, and don't see those wonky names ...

Might be helpful to nail down the cause, so copy-pasting my locale info from my duplicate bug: # locale LANG=sv_SE.utf8 LC_CTYPE=sv_SE.utf8 LC_NUMERIC=sv_SE.utf8 LC_TIME=sv_SE.utf8 LC_COLLATE=C LC_MONETARY=sv_SE.utf8 LC_MESSAGES=sv_SE.utf8 LC_PAPER=sv_SE.utf8 LC_NAME="sv_SE.utf8" LC_ADDRESS="sv_SE.utf8" LC_TELEPHONE="sv_SE.utf8" LC_MEASUREMENT="sv_SE.utf8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="sv_SE.utf8" LC_ALL= # locale -a C POSIX en_US.utf8 sv_SE.utf8
i suspect this is fixed by: http://sourceware.org/git/?p=glibc.git;a=commit;h=ac4c54f0cce8bb20c100a4c1041f3aa3e7d6cd0a plus the follow up build fix: http://sourceware.org/git/?p=glibc.git;a=commit;h=d6a403f953fe80f40761023af9a8b7824752bb32
ok, my x32 system could trigger this bug reliably. after applying this patch, i can longer do so. queued in all 2.12, 2.13, 2.14, and 2.15 versions. i pushed it out in 2.15-r2 w/out revbump as it seems to only affect gcc-4.7 (masked) peeps. http://sources.gentoo.org/gentoo/src/patchsets/glibc/2.15/0088_all_glibc-2.12-getconf-buffer-overflow.patch?rev=1.1
should be all set now in the tree; thanks for the report! Commit message: Add fix from upstream for getconf writing too many bytes to local buffer http://sources.gentoo.org/sys-libs/glibc/glibc-2.15-r2.ebuild?r1=1.8&r2=1.9
