Description C W Rose 2012-04-09 09:06:13 UTC
GCC 4.6.2 with the default USE flags fails to build on a Pentium III.
The (first) error is a failure of the stage 2/3 comparison of varasm.o,
but if stage3-gcc/varasm.o is copied to stage2-gcc/varasm.o and the
compilation continued, FWIW there is a further error with the log entry:
...
make[4]: Entering directory `/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.6.3/work/build/prev-gcc'
make[4]: *** No rule to make target `real-install-headers-tar'. Stop.
make[4]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/sys-devel/gcc-4.6.3/work/build/prev-gcc'
...
This doesn't at the moment concern me.

I've repeated this build three or four times now with different flags,
and it's failed every time. Moving to -march=native, BTW, produces
a different failure, but still fails. The same problem occurs with
GCC 4.6.3

The standard GCC package from gnu.org compiles in the usual out-of-tree
build without problems.

If there's some configuration change I could make to get it to compile,
I'd be grateful for advice.

The builds were in a chroot using the most recent Stage 3 and portage
tree, and no other software was running.

Attached (if I've got attachments right) are all the various logs, the
emerge data, and the two versions of varasm.o

C W Rose

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Unmask gcc-4.6.2
2. Run "emerge sys-devel/gcc"
3. Wait
Actual Results:
The emerge failed partway through the build.

Various logs dealing with a GCC 4.6.2 build failure on Pentium III
Comment 2 James Shaw (Simba7) 2012-05-23 06:26:37 UTC
It's happening on GCC 4.6.3, too. I tried to compile a new system and it constantly gives me this issue on my dual P3.
Comment 3 Priit Laes (IRC: plaes) 2012-05-23 19:19:02 UTC
Similar issue with 4.6.3 on "Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.60GHz"
and CFLAGS="-O2 -mtune=pentium-m -pipe -ggdb"
Comment 4 Andrey Volkov 2012-05-25 03:59:43 UTC
The same issue with GCC-4.6.3 on "Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.50GHz".
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium-m -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
Comment 5 James Shaw (Simba7) 2012-05-26 01:31:18 UTC
Ok. I just compiled it on a dual Xeon 2.4GHz (Poweredge 1750) and it didn't have the issue. I tried it again on my dual P3 and it crashed in the same spot.

What's broken with the P3?
Comment 6 Boney McCracker 2012-05-27 02:17:56 UTC
Confirming; same problem with ~x86 pentium3 (hardened)

Same issue here.

I am updating world for my eee1000 notebook (Atom N270) in chrooted environment on Core 2 Quad Q6600

gcc-4.6.3 compiles on "host" system smoothly.
CCFLAGS to be concerned: -O2 -march=i686 -pipe
kernel on "host" is 3.0.1-gentoo

gcc-4.6.3 fails to compile in chrooted environment.
CCFLAGS in chroot: -O2 -march=pentium-m -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -s

Seems -march=pentium-m is somewhat broken.

I can reproduce it on decent box, so bisecting before submitting should speed the process. I just haven't had time to do it yet

I'm getting the same failure with GCC 4.6.3 on Pentium III. How best to patch GCC with the fix provided?
Comment 18 Ryan Hill (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2012-07-28 18:28:05 UTC
There's no way we're backporting a patch that size. Try EXTRA_ECONF="--disable-frame-pointer". Or just use 4.5. It's not as if you're going to be missing out on any great pentium 3 related features.

Does anyone know when the next working version of GCC
will be available (for Pentium III, obviously).

It seems on the forums someone mentioned temporarily changing CFLAGS to i686 can get the compiler built. I may try this one out on my P3.

Confirmed, using CFLAGS = i686 works on my P3, now have 4.6.3 installed.

EXTRA_ECONF="--disable-frame-pointer" emerge -a1v gcc didn't help, same problem.

Guys, could please stop spamming this bug? Nobody forces you to use 4.6.x on those architectures. It's still ~x86 for a reason. Same goes for 4.7.x, where this is fixed by upstream. If you need to use newer version of gcc, use the latter.

Spreading FUD here won't speed up the backporting. If you really want to express your disappointment please use upstream bug [1]. If they notice that many people are interested in this issue being fixed they *might* be more willing to the job.

Merry Christmas to All,
Kacper Kowalik

Doesn't this mean you have a BROKEN gcc installed? At least when using -march=pentium3 again?

(In reply to comment #28)
> It's still ~x86 for a reason.

It is not any longer, although this bug is not yet fixed. I just stumbled over it on a pentium-m notebook after 4.6.3 was stabilized on x86. I will mask it manually.

Just read comment #18. There is no urgent need to update gcc on a pentium3 or pentium-m machine dating back to 2006 or earlier.

I think that should be: EXTRA_ECONF="--enable-frame-pointer"
Comment 37 Ján Ondrušek 2013-02-02 17:08:41 UTC
The same thing is happening to me with march=btver1. I was able to compile gcc 4.6.3 with march=nocona though.
Comment 38 Kacper Kowalik (Xarthisius) (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-02-10 08:53:12 UTC
There's a request for testing HEAD of gcc-4.6 branch on upstream bug. If any of you, who has PIII could verify it, we'd be grateful. Should you have problems with compiling from source there's gcc-4.6.4_pre9999.ebuild in toolchain overlay. TIA!
Comment 39 Richard Gray 2013-02-10 23:37:32 UTC
I wouldn't like to say whether these two problems are in fact the same, but there are suspicious similarities... see bug https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=450964

In short, I can confirm that leaving out the -march option will produce a usable compiler on PIII systems.

FWIW I have a pentium-M (after all, pretty much a PIII) and I'm seeing the same bootstrap comparison failures, so a gave the above ebuild a go... still fails (attachment 338976 [details])
Comment 42 Sebastian Flothow 2013-02-20 23:07:47 UTC
Just hit this on a PIII box. I'm aware this is an upstream bug, but maybe GCC 4.6 should be marked ~x86 until this is fixed?

For the record, the build worked with CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe" (my usual setting, with which the build failed, is CFLAGS="-O2 -march=pentium3 -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe").
Comment 43 Alex Cannon 2013-02-23 23:15:41 UTC
I just ran in to this bug and spent lots of time wondering what was wrong. Could some warning be added to the package that would trigger on march=pentium3 so M?
Comment 44 Michael Lee Yohe 2013-03-05 16:05:31 UTC
Confirm this bug affects not only march, but also for specific tuning:

march=i686
mtune=pentium-m
Comment 45 Ryan Hill (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2013-04-05 05:23:23 UTC
Since this won't be fixed upstream (the 4.6 branch is now closed) we'll add a workaround. Sorry about the wait.
