when installing sys-apps/kmod I get this error: >> checking for zlib... no >> configure: error: Package requirements (zlib) were not met: >> >> No package 'zlib' found This happens even though I have zlib-1.2.3-r1 is installed. Upgrading zlib to zlib-1.2.6 and then installing kmod works for me.

Wouldn't it help to update to =sys-libs/zlib-1.2.5-r2, which has been stable since last year?
1) Please attach the entire build log to this bug report. 2) Specifically, also attach the config.log to this bug report.
(In reply to comment #2) > Wouldn't it help to update to =sys-libs/zlib-1.2.5-r2, which has been stable > since last year? that's exactly my point, it doesn't pull in the latest zlib release and upgrade it.

I'm sorry, but I don't have them available anymore. At the end of the day, the kmod ebuild doesn't ask for a specific version of zlib when it obviously has a build dependency on a recent release. It could do with this: zlib? ( sys-libs/zlib ) being changed to this: zlib? ( >=sys-libs/zlib-1.2.6 )
should be fixed with http://sources.gentoo.org/viewvc.cgi/gentoo-x86/sys-apps/kmod/kmod-7.ebuild?r1=1.8&r2=1.9 http://sources.gentoo.org/viewvc.cgi/gentoo-x86/sys-apps/kmod/kmod-9999.ebuild?r1=1.22&r2=1.23
